Setting up a second or third Google Chrome profile is a very handy way to keep your work and home life separate – or manage two work Gmail accounts. Using different profiles allows you to log in to multiple Google accounts without logging out of your existing session and we find them invaluable.
To create a new Chrome Profile/User account:
- If you have a small tab at the top right of your Chrome screen with your email address or name on it, click it and choose Switch/Add User.
- If you don’t see the tab, go to the Hamburger Icon (top right) and select Settings > People> Add person
- Whichever method you use, you will be sent to a Google Sign in screen. Log in to the new account using your Google credentials.
- Choose whether to Sync details or not – if you choose to then this will sync your bookmarks and more – quite handy but use with care if you intend to share the profile with anyone.
You now have two completely separate Google Apps sessions, each open in a different Chrome window. Each session will be synced independently and you can switch between sessions by clicking the small tab that appears top right.
HOT TIP: If you have a lot of Profiles and wish to see a list of them (like the old method) you can right click on the tab.
You can rename your Chrome User Account and change the icon in the tab dropdown as well. Click on the icon to change it (you can add your own Google Profile photo if you have one); to change the name, click onto the name in the top right and look out for the pencil icon next to the name, under your picture. Change the name and then press Enter. So you could for example have a “Home” and “Work” profile with a nice icon for each one.
