There are times when using the standard ctrl-v or right click to paste in Google Docs just doesn’t allow you to do what you want. When this is the case, try using the web clipboard.

The web clipboard can be found on the top icon bar – in between the redo icon and the format painter icon.

TIP UPDATE: The web clipboard icon has been removed from the toolbar. Clipboard can now be found under the Edit menu.

Copy and paste multiple sections of a document

Web clipboard is ideal for copying and pasting multiple sections of a document, because you can queue sections and then paste them in to a new document. Use the web clipboard to copy everything you need from a doc, rather than having to switch between 2 docs, copying and pasting sections one after another.

To copy and paste using the web clipboard:

  • select your text, click on the web clipboard icon and choose Copy selection to web clipboard
  • the text you wish to copy is queued and will be listed in the menu
  • repeat the process for any additional sections of text – they will be queued in the menu
  • open a new Google document, click on the web clipboard and choose the item you wish to paste. You can paste as rich text or HTML.

Copy and paste cells from a Google spreadsheet

Web clipboard also allows you to copy cells in a Google Spreadsheet, and paste them as a properly formatted table in a Google Doc or Presentation. To copy and paste cells using the web clipboard:

  • select the cells you wish to copy, click on the web clipboard icon and choose Copy selection to web clipboard
  • the cell selection is queued and will be listed in the menu eg 13 x 11 cell range “cell text…”
  • repeat this for any additional sections of cells – they will be queued in the menu
  • open the new Google document, click on the web clipboard and choose the cell range you wish to paste
  • the cells are pasted as a table, with formatting.

Copy and paste charts from a Google spreadsheet

Use web clipboard to copy and paste charts from a Google Spreadsheet to a Google Doc or Presentation. To copy and paste charts using the web clipboard:

  • select the chart you wish to copy, when clicked a dropdown arrow appears in the top right of the chart
  • choose Copy chart
  • repeat this for any charts you wish to copy – they will be queued in the menu with the chart name showing
  • open the new Google document, click on the web clipboard and choose the chart you wish to paste
  • charts can also be copied into a Google presentation in this way.
Web clipboard is a very useful feature, especially when considering the clipboard can be accessed from different computers – as long as you sign into the same Google Apps account.
Content that you copy to the web clipboard is stored on Google’s servers and remains there until 30 days. You can delete all items stored on the server clipboard by clicking the drop-down menu and selecting Clear all items.
